Art Opening Reception: Jennifer Almquist, Photographs

Date: 02/04/2024
Time: 4:00 pm-6:00 pm

Jennifer Almquist has been a free-lance photographer for 44 years. She studied photography at NYU and filmmaking at the Sundance Film Institute. Former owner of the Almquist Gallery in New Preston, Jennifer was on the Organizing Committee for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games in New Haven where she photographed President and Mrs. Clinton, was Arts Administrator at the Hotchkiss School, and recently was the official documentarian of the Plow to Plate Coalition. An environmental activist, she was executive director of the Silent Oceans Project, and is a Board member of Cetacean Society International. She recently showed her images of soup kitchens and food pantries: Hunger in Litchfield County at UConn. Her images are currently on permanent display in the Café and in the Regional Cancer Center of New Milford Hospital, and the Community Foundation of Northwest CT.

She writes: “For forty years I shot black and white images, striving for the ‘decisive moment’ of my hero Henri Cartier-Bresson. Digital photography has an appealing immediacy, yet has meant a steep learning curve for me. I enjoy stretching my abilities with the control and precision of the computer. I admire the work of Paul Strand, Sally Mann, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Matt Mahurin, Inge Morath, and the great Magnum photographers.”

Please join us for a reception for the artist on Sunday, February 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., graciously hosted by the Library Associates.
