Foreign Correspondents in Hong Kong Then and Now with Mark Erder & Keith Richburg

Date: 11/19/2023
Time: 4:00 pm-5:30 pm

On Sunday, November 19, at 4:00 p.m., Mark Erder and Keith B. Richburg will discuss their experiences in Hong Kong, following the screening of the BBC documentary film “Of All the Gin Joints” (1999), produced by Mark Erder. The film portrays the men and women who frequented the Foreign Correspondent’s Club of Hong Kong. Its foundations lie in the Chinese wartime capital of Chong Qing in 1943 before it was re-located to Hong Kong in 1949. The FCC was used as a base for china watchers and as a retreat from the Vietnam War for those on R&R in Hong Kong.

Mark Erder is the founder of Asia Pacific Vision (APV), an independent video production company established in 1991 and based in Hong Kong. After 40+ years in Hong Kong, he has now moved back to Norfolk. Richburg is teaching at Princeton after reaching retirement age as Director of The Journalism and Media Studies Centre of Hong Kong University where he taught from 2016 to 2023. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of The Washington Post and a Post Global Opinions columnist, where he writes primarily about foreign policy issues. As long- time expats, they share many experiences but now there is one difference:  Erder plans to stay in CT. Richburg is undecided. Please register below for this program.
