Intellectual Freedom in Connecticut Libraries
Date: 10/02/2023
Time: 6:00 pm-7:00 pm
Book challenges in Connecticut’s school and public libraries have risen dramatically in the past 18 months, mirroring the surge the American Library Association has reported nationwide. Challenges in our communities reflect a national agenda that targets specific members of our communities. Over 90% of these challenges target LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals, authors, and issues.
Intellectual freedom is a core value of the library profession. Lindsay Delligan, Director of the Jonathan Trumbull Library and co-chair of the CLA Intellectual Freedom Committee, will discuss the rapid rise of book challenges across the country in the last few years. Lindsay will speak about how the process to request a reconsideration of library materials should work, and look at some of the recent book challenges in Connecticut. She will break down why certain books have been targeted and take questions from the audience.
