Red Sky in Morning by Paul Lynch (2013)
Thursday, May 21, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. via Zoom

Mark writes: We move from world-building to fable, a roller coaster of a novel built from folklore fairy tales and a TV documentary about Duffy’s Cut, a 1830s railroad dig outside of Philadelphia in which a mass grave of Irish immigrants has been found. This novel was Lynch’s first and shows an astounding ambition in his talent: to fuse a political historian with a fabulist, to fuse an Irish tall tale with a U. S. pulp-fiction western, to meld the story of European oppression with the U. S. dream of the freedom run. Quite readable and visual, RED SKY IN MORNING established Lynch as one of the best stylists of this modern generation.
