Art Exhibition: RaineyDay Erwin, “Layered Time: A Series in Four Parts”

Layered Time Earthbound scorched #1

The work of New York-based mixed media artist RaineyDay Erwin will be on display at the Norfolk Library during the month of April. In “Layered Time: A Series in Four Parts,” RaineyDay explores the world during her recovery from an accident that kept her wheelchair bound. In stunning multi-media images, the series moves from the depiction of underwater weightlessness amid sea creatures to earthbound recovery as gardens and forests beckon, and finally to the desire to float skyward away from the experience and the scorched earth. RaineyDay began her career in the shoe industry, which included working at Ralph Lauren Footwear, moving on to designing jewelry and wearable art for Neiman Marcus and Henri Bendel. She has exhibited her work in New York, Greenwich, Stonington, and Southampton, Long Island.

About the series, from the artist:

1.UNDERWATER -While being wheelchair bound, the exploration of weightlessness appealed to her, of moving effortlessly, unseen, unheard. And yet… the dread of unknown sea creatures, the dread of depths, the dread of drowning.

2.EARTHBOUND – In recovery, walking haltingly on the earth and in pain, the garden still beckons and the forest still calls. And yet…the menace of thorns, the menace of bears, the menace of insects.

3.SKYWARD – Recovered, the desire to leave it all behind. Oh, if only to fly with the birds. And yet…..beware planes crashing, beware raptors diving, beware angels falling.

4.OUTER SPACE – Now, the daily one foot in front of the other. The earth is scorched, the waters are polluted, the air is toxic. It’s almost ‘out of time’ time.

Now the parts of the series ‘Layered Time’ represent the plight of our planet:
              Underwater – polluted
              Earthbound – scorched
              Skyward- toxic
              Outerspace – out of time
