More about the book: Based on the true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington, who became America’s greatest stud sire. In 1850 Kentucky, Jarrett, an enslaved groom, and a bay foal forge a bond that will carry the horse to victories across the South. A young artist made his name painting the racehorse and then fights for the Union. In 1954 New York City, a gallery owner, becomes obsessed with a 19th century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. In 2019 Washington DC, Jess and Theo are drawn to one another by the horse – one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.
