There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak (2024)
Thursday, April 23, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. via Zoom
Mark writes: Shafak is surely one of the greatest Turkish writers . . . and she proves herself so with this novel about the history of a drop of water, told through the lives of multiple, interconnected characters, starting back in the days of ancient Ninevah, moving up through Dickensian London, and then into the modern war-torn world. I think her novel best sums up what this current set of the Book Group’s list is about: world-building with the unknown or unknowable as the keystone in the architecture. Water cannot escape our planet, but it apparently can escape history.
