July Art Exhibit

Robert Andrew Parker

A print by Robert Andrew Parker

During the month of July, the Library will display the work of Robert Andrew Parker. This exhibition will include oil paintings, monotypes, watercolors, etchings and a construction. These will reflect "the variety of things that interest me," says Parker, "landscapes, animals and portraits, invented situations, etc." Robert Andrew Parker was born in 1927 in Norfolk, Virginia. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and Atelier 17 in New York City. He has taught at Skowhegan, the School of Visual Arts in New York City and Gerit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Currently he lives and works in West Cornwall, Connecticut. His public collections include, amongst many, works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art in Washington D.C. and the Whitney Museum in New York.

The opening reception for the artist is Sunday, July 11, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Summer Comes to the Norfolk Library

Friday Brown Bag and Books

Don't fritter away the summer in the sun! Come inside the Norfolk Library and join us for lunch and raucous discussions, led by Mark Scarbrough, the author of eighteen cookbooks (and counting). You’ll soon be immersed in some of the best that’s been recently published, a summer reading list anyone would envy. So settle in with these books as the sun makes its lazy down-dog to the west every evening, then come join us on select Fridays at noon with your brown-bag lunch and a willingness to fritter away the hours the best way imaginable: by talking about books.

The Niagara River by Kay Ryan
Friday, July 9th, 12:00pm – 2:00pm

Kay Ryan is now the two-term Poet Laureate of the United States, a metaphysical poet of the mundane life, the heir apparent to Emily Dickinson. Ryan’s poetry is sly and short and smart and surprising—humble, almost casual verses that sneak up and hold you tight. You'll want to read them aloud to almost everyone you know.

36 Arguments For the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction by Rebecca Newberger Goldstein
Friday, July 30th, 12:00pm – 2:00pm

Cass Seltzer may be one of the new breed of best-selling atheists, but unfortunately he's not out to change the world's mind. He's just out to expunge his personal demons, brought to life by years of study under the biggest wind-bag of a professor, a mother on the run from orthodoxy, and his own love affairs with cut-throat academics, all in this laugh-out-loud-funny tale of yearning, innocence, and (of all things) Hasidism.

Tales Told by an Idiot

Written and Illustrated by Robin Rose Yurán

Author and Library Co-Director Robin Yuran

Robin Yuran, Co-Director of the Norfolk Library, is also known as The Shelfmouse. Yuran's first book The Shelf Life of a Mouse and Other Tales was published in 2003 and nearly sold out (a limited edition of 400) at her book signing. Back with more of the same, Robin has penned and illustrated Tales Told by an Idiot, also a limited edition. Read an excerpt of the book featured on Library Journal online by clicking here.
